Gerhardt Boukes BSc, BSc (Hons), PhD
Portfolio Manager: Human Health
Dr Gerhardt Boukes is the Human Health Portfolio Manager at Afrigen Biologics. He is part of the adjuvant formulation team that manufactures next generation adjuvants for vaccines to improve immune responses against infectious diseases.
Before joining Afrigen, Gerhardt was a postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology at the Nelson Mandela University in Port Elizabeth. His research focussed on natural prodrugs for pancreatic cancer and the in vitro biological activities of South African macrofungal species. Previously, he held a postdoctoral research assistant/senior technician position in the Department of Physiology and Medical Physics at the Royal College of Surgeons (RCSI) in Dublin, Ireland. His research focussed on apoptotic Bcl-2 family/BH3 proteins and finding novel serum biomarkers in colorectal cancer.
Gerhardt received his BSc in Biochemistry and Microbiology, and BSc Hons and PhD in Biochemistry from the Nelson Mandela University. His BSc Hons and PhD projects focussed on the expression of gene products for asthma and allergy therapies, and the in vitro biological activities of three Hypoxis species and their active compounds, respectively. Gerhardt holds an Honorary Research Associateship, in the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology at Nelson Mandela University, where he supervises post-graduate students.
